Knauss Hosts

A Knauss Host Office provides an educational opportunity to a fellow who in turn provides substantial and professional contributions to the office. How does a Host apply to the Knauss Fellowship Program?

All hosts are required to fill out the new Host Request Application Form (coming soon!).  If you need to update anything in the form after submission, please contact oar.sg.fellows@noaa.gov

When is the deadline to apply as a host and submit a position description?

Host request forms are due by September 27th (Exec) or November 27th (Leg)

Do all Hosts that apply get a Knauss Fellow?

Unfortunately, Hosts are not guaranteed to have a Knauss Fellow. Read about the placement process in the following questions.

When is Placement Week?

  • Placement Week is scheduled for October 15-19 (Exec) or December 3-7 (Leg). Host offices are required to participate in presentations and interviews scheduled throughout the week.

  • Hosts begin the week by presenting a short overview of their office and the fellowship position to the Finalists (Finalists become Fellows once they have been matched with a Host Office).

  • Finalists then select Host Offices with whom they will interview. Interview sign-up sheets will be emailed to the Host Offices and interviews will ensue through Thursday, October 18 (Exec) or Thursday, December 6 (Leg).

How does a Host submit their interview availability for Placement Week?

Hosts need to submit their availability for 30-minute interviews with Knauss finalists throughout Placement Week. Hosts should submit availability by October 10 (Exec) or November 27 (Leg); however, host offices will have an opportunity to update their availability on October 15 (Exec) or December 3 (Leg) after presenting to the finalists.

When and where are Host presentations during Placement Week?

Presentations are limited to a maximum of 10 minutes (suggested 7 min plus 3 min for questions). The National Sea Grant Office will provide a template for presentations.

Executive Hosts:

Monday October 15, 2018 at NOAA Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD

Executive Hosts:

Tuesday October 16, 2018 by 12:00 pm

Legislative Hosts:

Monday December 3, 2018  by 6:00 pm

Where and when are interviews held during Placement Week?

Interviews take place at each host's office. Finalists will be provided locations and directions to host offices.

Executive Hosts:

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Wednesday, October 17, 2018, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm

Thursday, Octoboer 18, 2018, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Legislative Hosts:

Tuesday, December 4, 2018, 12:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Wednesday, December 5, 2018, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

Thursday, December 6, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

Call back interviews: Thursday, December 6, 2018 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm

How does a host submit their ranking forms to the Sea Grant office?

Once interviews have been completed, each Host Office must put into rank order (one Finalist per rank) each of the Finalists interviewed by the Host office.  All Host Offices must email these rankings to oar.sg.fellows@noaa.gov by Friday October 19 (Exec) or Friday December 7 (Leg) by 6:30 am.  Failure to email these rankings to the National Sea Grant Office will disqualify a Host Office from consideration to host a fellow.

How are Hosts and Finalists matched? How does placement work?

Hosts will fill out a ranking sheet of Finalists they have interviewed and submit to the Knauss Program Manager by 6:30 a.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018 (Exec) or December 7, 2018 (Leg). Those rankings will then be provided to the Finalists. Finalists will choose, following rank order, which Host Office they will commit to. A Finalist may only choose one Host Office. Once a Finalist has chosen a Host Office, that Finalist must cross his/her name off of every other list on which they are ranked. The process continues until everyone has selected a Host Office.

When and where are Placement Week Evening Activities?

The evening meet and greets are listed in the Placement Week Agendas, found on the Placement Week page.

When and how will a Host know if it is successful in getting a Fellow?

Each office that is successful will be notified directly via a phone call or in person from the Fellow on the afternoon of Friday, October 19, 2018 (Exec) or Friday, December 7, 2018 (Leg). The Knauss Program Manager will notify each office that is not successful on the afternoon of Friday, October 19, 2018 (Exec) or Friday, December 7, 2018 (Leg).

How is the fellowship agreement finalized?

Fellows will be provided with a ratification document, which hosts and fellows will sign on Friday, October 19, 2018 (Exec) or Friday, December 7, 2018 (Leg). The document commits both the Host and the Fellow to the fellowship program. It is signed by a Host Office representative, the Fellow, and the Knauss Program Manager.

Executive Hosts: Guidance on funds transfer to Sea Grant to support the Fellow will also be provided as part of the Ratification Document.

If a Host is successful in getting a Fellow, when does the fellowship begin?

The fellowship dates are February 1, 2019 through January 31, 2020. The start and end dates are flexible so as to accommodate the host and fellow’s schedules. Please consult the program manager (OAR.SG.Fellows@noaa.gov) if you have questions regarding start and end dates.
