Coastal Law Center Identifies Emerging Issues

North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Resources Law, Planning and Policy Center (a joint program with NC Sea Grant and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Law School) cover a variety of topics related to resiliency. NC Sea Grant’s law, policy and community development specialist serves as the Center’s co-director and is working with Virginia Sea Grant and other partners to look at social vulnerability in terms of resiliency planning, mitigation and response for communities that include the poor, elderly and disabled. Previously, NC Sea Grant has led reviews of North Carolina’s ocean policies as well as emerging issues in the estuarine region. Both of those studies included state agencies and other partners who deal with hazards and planning. The Center, in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, also presents annual continuing education workshops for law and policy professionals, with topics often focusing on coastal hazards and planning.

Sea Grant’s American Lobster Initiative awards $5.4 million to further innovative research and outreach in support of the lobster industry and fishing communities

Since 2019, Sea Grant’s American Lobster Initiative has addressed critical knowledge gaps about the American lobster and its fishery facing a dynamic and changing environment. The Initiative supports a regional extension program in the Northeast and a national research competition. Fifteen emerging research projects were selected in 2023 and 2024 for $4.6 million in federal funding by the NOAA National Sea Grant College Program. Coordinated by Maine Sea Grant since 2019, the Northeast lobster extension program was recently renewed with an $840,000 federal award that supports work through 2026.
