I’m Lauren Alvaro, Sea Grant’s Knauss Fellow working as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act Engagement Specialist.

I grew up in South Florida and loved snorkeling on coral reefs as a kid. 🤿🌊 My love for the ocean and science led me to major in marine science at Florida Gulf Coast University. After interning in a benthic ecology lab and dabbling in biogeochemistry at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, I went on to earn my master’s degree in marine science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William and Mary.

During grad school, I studied seagrass ecology and worked on seagrass restoration projects. My research investigated how shifts in dominant seagrass species affect animal communities in the lower Chesapeake Bay. I identified over 40,000 marine bugs and 2,000 fish for this research. 🔬🦐🐟

In my Knauss position, I engage with community partners to address issues related to marine debris, building a climate-ready workforce and other topics. I develop engagement strategies for grantees, create communication products and plan events like Sea Grant’s 2024 Marine Debris Symposium. Learn more about the upcoming symposium here: bit.ly/MD-Symposium

I’m excited to continue this meaningful work throughout my fellowship year and am very thankful for this great experience. There is so much amazing work being done by Knauss Fellows this year. Be sure to follow us on our journeys as we grow together!
