Helping Coastal Communities Prepare for Flood Insurance Changes

Helping Coastal Communities Prepare for Flood Insurance Changes

North Carolina Sea Grant

Flood insurance is an important topic in coastal communities, for long-term and new residents. Officials at the state and local level, as well as property owners, seek North Carolina Sea Grant for technical expertise and to work with federal partners to find solutions for new and existing building adaptations that result in increased community resilience. Discussions include opportunities to improve communities'; CRS ratings, often by increasing the requirements for freeboard, or the placement of the floor joists of the living areas. NCSea Grant has served on state and federal panels looking at floodplain mapping and other planning tools for communities.
