Science serving America's coasts since 1966

🐢 Texas is home to 5 species of threatened and endangered sea turtles. Knowing how these turtles are distributed helps scientists to manage and protect them.

@texasseagrant and partners developed a mobile app, iSeaTurtle, to allow community members across the state to be a part of turtle science and conservation efforts!

With the app, you can report sea turtle sightings directly from your smartphone, providing valuable data for researchers, like habitat use and population density.

Hurricanes can generate catastrophic damages, piling wreckage along shorelines and waterways. When Hurricane Michael swept through the Florida Panhandle in 2018, it left behind 1,370 derelict vessels. These derelict vessels create hazards for other boaters, prevent navigational access, entangle and trap wildlife, and damage important seagrass and oyster reef habitats.

To enhance Florida waterways, Florida Sea Grant is helping coastal communities that were devastated by Hurricanes Michael and Ian remove derelict vessels and other marine debris. Learn more about derelict vessels and removal programs here: https://bit.ly/NoBoatLeftBehind

The 2024 National Agritourism Survey is now collecting responses, and you are invited to participate! ‍🌾

All agricultural operations that welcome visitors – whether for on-farm education, direct sales, entertainment, recreation, special events, and more – are invited to complete the survey. So, if you offer education or rent event space on your farm, have a farmstand, a petting zoo, offer pick-your-own, farm stays, or other on-farm experiences, your insights are crucial.

By participating in this survey, you'll help us pinpoint the types of support farmers like you require – whether it's business assistance, developing networks, applying for grants, or navigating zoning and liability issues. Our goal is to help build the resources you need, improve your access to critical information and opportunities, and shape policy decisions that impact your industry.

This survey is part of a collaborative project led by Penn State with the University of Vermont, Oklahoma State University, the University of Maine, Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development, and other partners across the country.

We recognize that your time is valuable, which is why the survey will only take 15 minutes to complete. Your insights are invaluable to us, and we sincerely appreciate your willingness to participate.

To take part in the survey, please visit: https://pennstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5BYIq82EDNWiwtw

If you have questions about the survey, please contact Claudia Schmidt from Penn State Extension at cschmidt@psu.edu.

Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida), the West Coast’s only native oyster species, used to be plentiful in Elkhorn Slough, but their numbers have recently plummeted due to pollution and overharvesting. To save the oysters, Kerstin Wasson, Research Coordinator at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, partnered with California Sea Grant to create the first conservation aquaculture project for oysters in California. Overall, the team has outplanted 162,500 juvenile oysters. Now, for the first time since 2012, wild juvenile oysters have been found growing in Elkhorn Slough in places where none had been outplanted!

How are fishermen-led projects increasing our understanding of the Southeast Alaska ecosystem?

Alaska Sea Grant has partnered with the Alaska Ocean Observing System and the Alaska Trollers Association to provide fishermen with instruments like the CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) devices to measure the temperature and salinity of the water. Fishermen collect samples year-round at set stations along frequently used fishing routes, providing a robust time series of environmental conditions and a better understanding of the waters where fishermen fish.

What happens when a butterfly flaps its wings on Bogue Banks, NC? 🦋🌾

The crystal skipper (Atrytonopsis quinteri) is a rare butterfly that relies on dune habitats and can only be found on a few North Carolina islands. Adults feed on nectar from various native flowers, but caterpillars only feed on a native grass called seaside little bluestem. Unfortunately, urbanization along Bogue Banks has degraded dune habitats where the plants grow.

To restore the habitats on Bogue Banks where the crystal skipper thrives, North Carolina Sea Grant continues to build on past conservation efforts through dune enhancement and plantings of seaside little bluestem and nectar plants.
