Stu Goldberg is our Environmental Compliance Coordinator and assists with grant activities for Alaska, California, Guam, Hawaiʽi, Oregon, and Washington.
Stu was an environmental regulator (i.e., EFH via Magnuson-Stevens Act) for 7 years for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Hawaiʽi where he completed consultations and restoration activities to protect the coral reef ecosystem. Stu has consulted on a variety of in-water construction projects including harbor expansions, wetland restoration, offshore aquaculture, flood control, coastal hardening/protection, and others. Stu has experience coordinating with various stakeholders and federal agencies.
Stu is a marine and aquatic biogeochemist. He earned his Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he studied the cycling of dissolved organic carbon throughout the open ocean and Santa Barbara Channel. He has completed postdoctoral research fellowships at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Hawaiʽi, Mānoa. Throughout these experiences, Stu developed expertise in ocean acidification, submarine groundwater discharge, and isotope geochemistry to assess the cycling of nutrients and water quality. Stu also completed a science policy postdoctoral fellowship at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership in Washington, D.C, teaming up with national shellfish farmers on federal executive and legislative outreach to adapt to impacts from ocean acidification.
In his free time, Stu enjoys surfing, playing ice hockey, hiking, and spending time with his family.
