National Flood Insurance Program/Community Rating System

Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium

As the cost of insurance continues to increase along the coast, local communities have been pushed to find ways to reduce the expenses to local residents. One incentive for communities to mitigate for future conditions is through the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (NFIP CRS). Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant has provided technical assistance in the form of holding workshops, hosting webinars, participation in community floodplain management groups, and development of outreach materials specifically designed for community’s who participate in the CRS. Materials are designed with the community’s individual needs in mind (i.e. an introductory primer on how to join the CRS or the development of a full Program for Public Information).
