New Jersey Sea Grant and NOAA programs partner to offer professional development opportunities for undergraduate students.

NOAA recently awarded New Jersey Sea Grant funding to plan and host an event focused on workforce development for the field of fisheries population and ecosystem dynamics. The program is a partnership effort supported by Sea Grant, NOAA’s Office of Education and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) aimed at engaging undergraduate students in the specialized field of population and ecosystem dynamics, which combines science with mathematics for science-based management of U.S. fisheries.
All partners involved in the program are committed to developing a talented and diverse workforce in the field of fisheries science and management.
New Jersey Sea Grant will work with a team of academic professionals from the Center for Fisheries and Ocean Sustainability at Rutgers University to host a two-week summer course in 2020 for undergraduate students at the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve. The workshop will consist of both hands-on field trips and computer lab settings. Students interested in biology, math, computer science, engineering, or similar fields may consider applying to participate. An announcement about the workshop and application process will be made in Fall 2019.
This is the second annual Undergraduate Population and Ecosystem Dynamics Workshop sponsored by Sea Grant, NMFS, and the NOAA Office of Education. The 2019 Workshop will be hosted by Oregon Sea Grant and Oregon State University.
