Homeowners Handbooks

In 2007 Dennis Hwang and Darren K. Okimoto of the University of Hawai'i Sea Grant co-authored a community specific Homeowner's Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards. The handbook targets the average homeowner and essentially does as much homework for the homeowner as possible in order for a homeowner to prepare for natural disasters. Since 2007, the Hawai'i Homeowners Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards has gone through 8 print runs with over 65,000 copies. The handbook has been adapted by 7 other Sea Grant programs.

Coastal Community Resilience Index’s success inspires development of additional tools

Due to the incredible sucess of the Coastal Resilience Index, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant is working with several partners to pilot test the Fisheries Resilience Index and the Tourism Resilience Index. The Fisheries Index focuses on indicators important to commercial and recreational fishermen, seafood processors and marina owners. The Tourism Index addresses 10 categories, including communications, marketing, disaster operations and workforce issues.

Safe Boating Week: Spotlight on Sea Grant Extension Agent Peter Nguyen

Peter Nguyen works very closely with Vietnamese-speaking fishermen to offer them technical assistance, such as providing information about new regulations and proposed legislation. Peter, a former commercial shrimper, has been with the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Outreach Program since 2006. He works at Mississippi State University’s Coastal Research Center in Biloxi and works on fishing gear research, seafood marketing and other outreach efforts.

LaDon Swann Appointed to National Academy of Sciences’ Gulf of Mexico Program

The National Academy of Sciences' Gulf of Mexico Program has appointed Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Director LaDon Swann to an advisory group that will create a strategic vision and guide the program’s development and implementation. The program will focus on human health, environmental protection and oil system safety in the Gulf of Mexico and the United States' Outer Continental Shelf.
