The Networks Advisory Council, which includes the Chairs of the Sea Grant Extension Assembly, Communicator, Education, Fiscal Coordinator, Legal, and Research Coordinator Networks, is hosting a series of virtual cross-network workshop sessions in November and December 2020. Participants in this workshop will examine which tools and techniques have been most effective for reaching our traditional audiences, as well as new audiences, during the lockdown phases of the COVID pandemic. We will build off of discussions that have occurred within the networks, and a webinar that the Extension Assembly hosted (a summary of that meeting will be provided), to focus the conversation around successful strategies that could be adopted by other networks and programs. The 90-minute workshop will include breakout sessions within which individuals will share their experiences and report out to the larger group. The goal is to generate a summary of successful strategies that will be shared across the Sea Grant programs and (potentially) incorporated into future professional development programs such as the Sea Grant Academy.
Virtual Fellowships and Student Experiences

In response to COVID-related restrictions, several programs have pivoted to offer virtual opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students (i.e., Knauss fellowships, Community Engaged Internships, state graduate fellowships, undergraduate internships). There are many lessons learned, good practices, and helpful suggestions to be shared among program managers, mentors, and the fellows themselves. Participants of this session will help select topics that will be covered in a webinar/Q&A format.

Cultivating a Culture of Belonging and Inclusion

Alongside the development of Sea Grant’s 10-year DEI vision, several Sea Grant programs have formed committees and/or working groups to examine what justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) means for their program and explore ways in which JEDI can be integrated into the management and activities of the program. The goals of this session are to facilitate information exchange across the network and explore strategies that will lead to the creation of a culture of belonging and inclusion in Sea Grant. This session will feature tools, resources, and processes that Sea Grant programs can use to integrate JEDI into their programming, highlight programmatic or individual responses to initiatives like #BlackLivesMatter or #ShutdownStem, and discuss ways in which we can advance JEDI as a network. Knowledge generated from this session will be used to inform activities across the Sea Grant Network, including next steps for Sea Grant’s DEI Community of Practice, JEDI-related professional development activities, and Sea Grant’s Community-Engaged Internship Program.

While this session will be informed by the previous JEDI session, participation in the previous session is not a prerequisite for participation here.

Sea Grant’s National Leadership on Aquaculture: How We Got Here, A Current Read and What Next

Aquaculture has long been a hallmark of the Sea Grant program. Many resources—harnessed in the National Sea Grant Office, through regional initiatives and at individual programs—are devoted to this sector. It has been important to the network’s efforts in securing stable and growing funding from congressional appropriators. After attending this session, participants will walk away with an understanding of the history of Sea Grant aquaculture research and extension. The current state of aquaculture through the lens of resiliency, and tapping alternative markets, will also be explored. After attending this session, participants will walk away with an understanding of the history of Sea Grant aquaculture research and extension, including details on past impressive accomplishments. The current state of aquaculture will also be explored. The non-aquaculture extension participant will deepen their understanding of colleagues’ work and gain insights on how best to support others in that work. Aquaculture specialists will get a past-present-and-future perspective on their specialty.

Resiliency Projects in the Sea Grant Network

This opportunity comprises a series of regional (ish) workshops centered on current resiliency projects and initiatives. Every Sea Grant program is encouraged to prepare one 5-minute lightning talk to be presented during their relevant session(s) (identified below). Content for this talk should be generated by the program, and focus on key resiliency projects or initiatives taking place within the program, with a goal to generate discussion in the latter part of the session, (i.e., tell others in your general region what you would like them to know). Participation in more than one session is allowed. Warm beverages and snacks are encouraged. To allow for network-wide learning, lightning talks will be recorded and shared after sessions are complete. More details will be shared with workshop participants closer to the workshop date.
